In this system the engine is the whole closed loop: feeling, choice, action, reflection, law. What is felt becomes a named choice. The choice becomes an act. The act is reflected on and integrated. What was learned becomes law, which shapes the next feeling. Each turn of the loop leaves a receipt, and each receipt is the foundation the next turn begins from.
There is a failure mode that shows up in every complex practice. The practitioner begins well. The cut goes well. Somewhere around the fourth or fifth cut, something changes, and they push through. By the seventh cut they are compensating for small errors they did not log because they were moving quickly. By the tenth cut the surface is damaged, or the session is over, and they cannot explain why.
This is not failure of skill. It is failure of sequence. The skill was there. The steps between the felt signal and the committed cut were skipped, the steps that would have caught the shifted conditions and adjusted before the damage accumulated.
The Atua Compass is the correct order of operations for any significant act. Not a checklist. A sequence. The atua are not personalities here; they are modes of operation, each with a function and a condition that must be met before the next position opens.

Then the loop returns to Papa, one receipt richer. The Compass is not a cycle. It is a helix: each turn returns to a position structurally identical to the start, but elevated, slightly more informed, one Tiki heavier.
The locked sequence prevents three failure modes that emerge reliably under pressure. The shortcut loop: skipping Whiro because the intention feels clear, so small deceptions accumulate until the damage is too deep to trace. The oscillation loop: cutting and cutting with no pause, each stroke made from an unprocessed state, busier than ever and learning less than it should. The drift loop: skipping Rangi, so small angular errors compound until the work has drifted from the reference and cannot be corrected without removing sound material.
The Compass is not a protocol for cautious people. It is a protocol for people working under pressure who cannot afford to lose ground.
